“攴”字象形，甲骨文象以手持杖或持鞭击打之形，为汉字部首之一。从“攴”、“攵”旁的汉字，本义大多与鞭打、敲打有关，如“牧”、“攻”、“败”等。在现代汉字中，“攴”大多写成“攵”，只有极个别汉字保留着“攴”的写法，如“敲”。[1]
例如：“教”字，从“孝”，从“攴”，在以前的奴隶社会，奴隶主要靠鞭杖来施行他们的教育。
后来人们把变形后的“攴”（pū）字部首称为“反文旁”。
